Each year about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3-4 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, and over 143,000 people will die each year from a stroke. St. Mary-Corwin ‘s Stroke Center is dedicated to caring for patients who suffer a stroke, as well as educate our communities on the warning signs and risk factors of stroke. With the “Gold Seal of Approval” for healthcare quality from The Joint Commission, the Stroke Center certification acknowledges the high quality of care for acute stroke provided by St. Mary-Corwin in southern Colorado. St. Mary-Corwin's stroke program has been certified by The Joint Commission since 2006. To earn this disease-specific distinction, the stroke program was evaluated according to Joint Commission standards. The process involves assessment of the program's protocols, and includes interviews with patients and staff. St. Mary-Corwin voluntarily pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation. Earning disease-specific certification further illustrates St. Mary-Corwin’s dedication to the highest quality healthcare for patients. By certifying our stroke program, The Joint Commission is acknowledging nationally that our staff has been recognized for their knowledge and clinical expertise of evidence-based guidelines and national standards. |
