The Culture of St. Mary-Corwin

Mission in Action is the associate-driven culture at St. Mary-Corwin that promotes empowerment and self-esteem in the workplace. This culture was created and built upon by the associates who work to carry out our mission everyday.

In 2002, the administrative team at St. Mary-Corwin embarked on a journey to find a way to empower associates, to build a culture that would increase their work satisfaction. To do this, all associates were invited to give feedback on the type of culture they wanted to work in at St. Mary-Corwin. Associates named this cultural environment our “Mission in Action.

Since then, many Service Teams have been and will continue to be formed. The first was the Standards Team, where associates took the information gathered from the cultural feedback sessions and chose Our Seven Standards that associates agreed to support.

A Communication Team was also formed to respond to the requested need for a consistent form of communication at St. Mary-Corwin. From this came the “C-Boards (Communication Boards), which are seen throughout the hospital in each department. These contain up-to-date news under headings of People, Service, Excellence and Financials & Growth. Administrative biographies, patient letters, community events, awards, and financial information are posted to educate associates, patients and their families.

With the development and growth of Mission in Action, we have found that in order to receive high patient satisfaction, we must first have associate engagement. Our culture focuses on engaging associates by listening to them, by encouraging their growth and by providing associate recognition experiences.

The cultural experience of Mission in Action continues to grow and will be expanding its focus to also include physician and patient loyalty.
