New program aims to provide children and families healthy dining options at hospitals.

ENGLEWOOD, CO (Oct. 25, 2012) – Centura Health, Colorado’s largest health care network, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Partnership for a Healthier America to join a national movement by participating in the Hospital Healthy Food Initiative; a program aimed at offering nutritious food options for children and families.

Under the agreement, Centura Health’s 13 Colorado hospitals will meet benchmarks over the next four years, making sure that both children and adults have a wide range of healthy options through nutrition labeling, healthy food marketing, more fruit and vegetable offerings and the elimination of deep fat fryers. 

The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to solving our nation’s childhood obesity crisis. PHA brings together public, private and nonprofit groups to develop commitments and strategies to end childhood obesity and it works with unbiased third parties to monitor and report on participants’ progress. Centura Health is one of 17 hospital systems across the country to participate in the Hospital Healthy Food program.

The Hospital Healthy Food initiative is aligned with Centura Health’s goal of improving the health by helping people in the communities we serve. The program also fits with the values of Centura Health’s sponsors, Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and Adventist Health System. CHI is committing 44 of its hospitals to the Hospital Healthy program, in addition to those in Centura Health, while offering healthy choices has always been a part of the Adventist health care philosophy.
