The Breast Center of Excellence at St. Mary-Corwin is excited to announce that we now offer 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis – an extraordinary technology that lets your doctor see breast tissue in a way never before possible.
With 3D mammography doctors can review the breast in sections, allowing them to find cancer earlier and reduce false positive results.
Much like a CT scan, 3D mammography captures multiple slices of the breast, all at different angles. The images are brought together to create a crystal-clear, three-dimensional reconstruction of the breast. The radiologist is then able to review the reconstruction, one thin slice at a time, almost like turning pages in a book. This helps doctors better identify areas of concern while reducing the chance for cancer to hide behind overlapping tissue.
A 3D breast exam may be used as a screening tool in conjunction with a traditional mammogram, or may be used by itself for a diagnostic mammogram.
Current findings show that with 3D mammography, women are 37 percent less likely to be called back for additional testing because something unusual appeared on their mammogram. This means fewer women have to undergo the anxiety and distress associated with being called back. 3D mammography has also been shown to improve cancer detection by as much as 30 percent.
