St. Mary-Corwin Performs Community's First Laser Atherectomy Benefitting Patients Suffering from Heart and Vascular Disease

    April 13,2017

(PUEBLO, COLO.) Surgeons at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center recently performed southeastern Colorado’s first laser atherectomy, a new treatment option available for heart and vascular patients bringing hope to individuals across southeastern Colorado suffering from peripheral artery disease (PAD) and other diseases of the heart. Compared to traditional therapies, the next generation laser technology known as Turbo-Power™ is a highly accurate and effective alternative to more traditional treatment methods giving the physician the ability to safely remove plaque from the blood vessels within the body.

Laser atherectomy, a vaporizing technology that breaks down stubborn blockages in the blood stream, is an important option for patients with blocked arteries in the heart or limbs. By restoring blood, the procedure can improve a patient’s mobility and reduce the risk of amputation. For patients with coronary artery disease, the laser is used to remove plaque and prepare the blood vessel for a stent.

“Laser atherectomy advances our commitment to delivering unprecedented cardiovascular care to the local community, arming physicians with innovations that improve outcomes for patients, saving lives and limbs from the threat of amputation,” said Johanna Shearer, director, imaging and cath lab services, St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center. “We’re proud to have recently performed the area’s first atherectomy using the Turbo-Power™ technology and paving the way for high-quality care for the heart and vascular patient.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the incidence of PAD is increased by risk factors including smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol and occurs most often among those age 60 and older. PAD affects at least eight to 12 million Americans, and detection and superior treatment remain key in improving the lives of patients suffering from such diseases.

St. Mary-Corwin recently expanded its vascular services to include a state-of-the-art vascular theater with advanced imaging capabilities designed to enhance surgeons’ ability to deliver the best possible outcomes for vascular patients. The high-tech operating room is sleek in design, has powerful computing capabilities and provides enhanced visualization through HD monitors resulting in the ultimate surgical experience for patients and surgeons.
